Part of our team headed to Milovice to support the activities of ČSOP JARO Jaroměř, an organization that cares for more than 250 ecologically valuable sites across the Czech Republic. In Milovice, we helped maintain and improve habitats that are important for a number of rare animal species.
One of them is the critically endangered butterfly species Phengaris alcon f. rebeli. This remarkable species has a fascinating life cycle – its caterpillars are able to deceive Myrmica ants into believing they are ant larvae. The ants then take them into their nests, where they protect and feed them throughout the winter. Preserving suitable conditions for both species therefore requires long-term and systematic care of the landscape.
Our volunteering activities did not end in nature. Our colleague Alča once again donated blood, while Hanka spent the day helping abandoned animals at a local shelter.
